Energy Focus.

What does energy focus have anything to do with learning languages?

Everything. The way we focus our energy is the key to achieving anything in life. Many people claim that they are not smart enough to learn languages, and many other are not interested at all.

After discussing this subject with different people, in different countries, the common denominator is the way both energy and creativity are focused.

When encouraged to study a second language, the interviewees were resourceful, creative and fast to produce responses listing all the reasons why they could not learn another language. All their energy and creativity was utilized to justify inaction instead of using it to encourage ACTION. The key is to focus all the energy and creativity to find reasons to prove that it is, in fact, POSSIBLE.

While this may seem to be difficult at first it becomes easier over time. It helps us move up from “I’m sorry but I don’t speak that language” to: “I don’t speak that language but I’m GOING to learn it.”

Enfoque de Energía.

¿Qué tiene que ver el enfoque de energía con el aprendizaje de idiomas?

Todo. La forma en que enfoquemos nuestra energía es la clave para lograr todo en la vida. Muchas personas afirman que no son lo suficientemente inteligentes para aprender idiomas y a muchos otros no les interesa en lo absoluto.

Después de discutir este tema con diferentes personas, en diferentes países, el denominador común es la forma en que se concentran tanto la energía como la creatividad.

Cuando se les motivaba a estudiar un segundo idioma, los entrevistados eran ingeniosos, creativos y rápidos para generar respuestas que enlistaban razones por las cuales no podían aprender otro idioma. Toda su energía y creatividad era utilizada para justificar la inacción en lugar de usarlas para estimular la ACCIÓN. La clave está en concentrar toda la energía y creatividad en encontrar razones para demostrar que, de hecho, sí es POSIBLE.

Si bien esto puede parecer difícil al principio se hace más fácil el paso del tiempo. Nos ayuda a ascender de “Lo siento, pero no hablo ese idioma” a: “No hablo ese idioma pero lo VOY a aprender”.

Definitions.

Why are definitions so important?

Definitions help us to understand each other, and to prevent conflict.

It is perfectly normal to see the same object in many different ways. At the beginning of every class I like to ask the students the definition of the subject we are about to study. I always get as many definitions as I have students in the classroom. It is called human nature. It reflects the beauty of human nature.

Having so many definitions for the very same thing can cause conflict in any situation. It is imperative to establish (and share) clear definitions that everybody understands. Once definitions have been communicated and explained to all interested parties, the chance for misunderstandings will be very small.

Definitions tell us exactly what we must do on any project. Without definitions…How can evaluate if we truly accomplished anything?

Definiciones.

¿Por qué son tan importantes las definiciones?

Las definiciones nos ayudan a entendernos el uno al otro y a prevenir conflictos.

Es perfectamente normal que veamos al mismo objeto en muchas formas diferentes. Al comienzo de cada clase, me gusta pedirles a los estudiantes que den su definición del tema que vamos a estudiar. Siempre obtengo tantas definiciones como el número de estudiantes en el aula. A esto se le llama naturaleza humana. Esto es el reflejo de la belleza de la naturaleza humana.

Teniendo múltiples definiciones para la misma cosa puede causar conflictos en cualquier situación. Es imperativo establecer y compartir, una definición clara que todo el mundo pueda entender. Una vez que las definiciones se han comunicado y explicado a todas las partes interesadas, la posibilidad de malos entendidos será muy reducida.

Las definiciones nos dicen exactamente lo que debemos hacer en cualquier proyecto. Si no tenemos definiciones claras… ¿Cómo se puede evaluar si en realidad hemos logrado algo?

Goals.

To take on any activity in life we must establish a goal. While to many this may sound like a chore, or punishment, it actually is a lot of FUN!

When we climb to the top of a mountain, one can feel how beautiful the landscape is. It is a lot more fun than having it described by someone else. But if I never climb a mountain…How will I ever know?

Establishing a goal is like embarking on an adventure. And who doesn’t like adventures? Who doesn’t like to watch Indiana Jones? Who doesn’t like to imagine that they ARE Indiana Jones? It is so much FUN!

I have met people who did not like establishing goals for fear of failure. There is no such thing as failure. Its proper name is: lesson. Lessons teach us, and make us stronger individuals. Lessons encourage us to try new methods until we accomplish our goal. Either way we become stronger. And who doesn’t like being strong?

Imagine Indiana Jones never establishing a goal. Imagine Indiana Jones never going treasure hunting to Jordan, or India. Never embarking on an adventure. What kind of movie would that be?

Metas.

Para hacer frente a cualquier actividad en la vida hay que establecer una meta. Aunque para muchos esto puede sonar como una tarea, o como un castigo… ¡En realidad es  muy DIVERTIDO!

Cuando subimos a la cima de una montaña, uno puede sentir la belleza del paisaje. Es mucho más divertido que si otra persona nos los describe. Pero si nunca me subo a una montaña… ¿Cómo lo voy a saber?

El establecimiento de un objetivo es como embarcarse en una aventura. ¿Y a quién no le gustan las aventuras? ¿A quién no le gusta ver la película de Indiana Jones? ¿A quién no le gusta imaginarse que ES Indiana Jones? ¡Es muy EMOCIONANTE!

He conocido personas a quienes no les gustaba establecer metas por miedo al fracaso. El fracaso no existe. Su nombre correcto es: lección. Las lecciones nos enseñan y nos hacen personas más fuertes. Las lecciones nos motivan a probar nuevos métodos hasta que logremos nuestro objetivo. De una u otra manera nos volvemos más fuertes. ¿Y a quién no le gusta ser fuerte?

Imagínate  que Indiana Jones nunca establece una meta. Imagínate que Indiana Jones nunca se va a buscar tesoros a Jordania o la India. Sin ningún tipo de aventuras…¿Qué tipo de película sería?

Anything is possible.

 We have heard this at least a thousand times before.

 Why, then, there are so many people who do not believe these wise words? Quite simple: they have been repeated so many times, without follow up. Just like any word repeated a hundred times seems to lose its meaning, so does the meaning of this phrase.

The phrase also lacks the most important element to see it do its work: taking personal responsibility to put it into practice.

Anything is possible means that we can achieve anything we want because WE are going to do the work required to achieve what we desire. It is possible because we do not depend on anybody else but ourselves.

Therefore the real question is: What are WE waiting for?

Todo es posible.

Ya antes hemos escuchado esto por lo menos mil veces.

¿Por qué, entonces, hay tanta gente que no cree en estas sabias palabras? Muy sencillo: Porque se han repetido muchas veces sin darles seguimiento. Al igual que cualquier palabra que se repite cien veces parece perder su significado, lo mismo ocurre con el significado de esta frase.

A la frase también le falta el elemento más importante para verla realizar su trabajo: asumir la responsabilidad personal para ponerla en práctica.

Todo es posible significa que podemos lograr cualquier cosa que queramos, porque vamos a hacer el trabajo necesario para lograr lo que deseamos. Es posible, porque no depende de nadie más sino de nosotros mismos.

Por lo tanto, la verdadera pregunta es: ¿Qué estamos esperando?
